Though the California wildfires have caused considerable damage to the Napa Valley area, they have also created an opportunity for people to step up and help their community.
Compline Wine Bar, Napa Cigars, and Blackbird Inn are three local mainstays that still have power, and have been doing their part to help those who do not. They’ve risen to the occasion to offer those affected by the fires a safe haven and even a hot meal.
Compline Wine Bar sent out a message to locals via Instagram Wednesday, alerting followers that they have shelter, food, and WiFi. They have also partnered with other local businesses to give first responders food as they help to extinguish the flames and provide assistance to those affected.
“The community is in distress,” Compline co-owner Ryan Stetins told CNN, “but I saw this online and it sticks with me: ‘Love is thicker than the smoke in the air.”
Napa Cigars also has WiFi and is giving residents a place to go if they need it, and owner Eric Smaldino welcomes everyone looking for somewhere to relax or access the internet.
“I was motivated [to help] because we had the resources and wanted to offer it to anyone who was in need,” Smaldino tells Mashable. “Many of our friends live in areas that lost power and most of the valley was without phone service.”
And for those who have been displaced, the Blackbird Inn is offering discounted rates for owners and their pets.
“We are fully functioning, just a little smoky smelling,” manager Emily King told CNN.
These businesses aren’t the only ones helping out though, as every day more are finding ways to do what they can to help out their neighbors.
