It’s Black Friday — and you know what that means!
We’re all part of a corporate machine that makes us rip each other’s hair out at 6 a.m. for the last $20 spiralizer at Target.
Let’s be real: Black Friday is a thoroughly dehumanizing experience. So, if you want off the free market ride of American thoughtlessness, why not protest by spending your money on stuff that actually benefits the human race instead?
Here are a few alternatives to the usual Black Friday chaos:
Turn Black Friday into a call to action for our collective civil rights. #ReclaimBlackFriday is a movement that wants to take this day from the American capitalist machine, and instead give it back to the people who arguably suffered most because of it.
National treasure Yvette Nicole Brown is encouraging everyone to use Black Friday’s namesake to ensure more black voices get heard in 2018. The movement aims to build black political power by electing officials that actually represent and reflect our country’s demographics.
Donate to campaigns for policy makers that will battle inequality by investing in public schools, and fight to end police brutality and mass incarceration. Just text “RECLAIM” to 484848 or visit the website.
2. Spend your money — at places that are giving back.
If we’re going to sell our souls to consumerism, why not do it the right way, with companies that are giving back to charities on Black Friday?
Here’s a really nifty guide to the companies throwing in deals to benefit human kind. For example: In light of this watershed moment for sexual assault survivors, the classy clothing brand Cuyana is matching every item sold with a donation to H.E.A.R.T. (Helping Ease Abuse Related Trauma). Meanwhile, the swimwear store Summersalt is giving 100 percent of its Black Friday profits to ocean conservation with the Lonely Whale Foundation.
The tech startup DoneGood recently launched a new site aimed at counteracting the overwhelmingly negative effects of big corporations have on the environment by offering more sustainable alternatives.
The Shop for Good Sunday initiative provides a complete list of places for a post-holiday spending spree that we can all actually feel good about. Because, as we know, every dollar you spend is like a vote in America.
You can also download the to make the movement part of your everyday approach to spending.
4. Fuck Black Friday. Go next level with #GivingTuesday.
So, remember how just yesterday you were surrounded by family, and vowing to give thanks? Well, Black Friday is the national day of forgetting all that crap and going, “Yeah, but toasters are half off!”
But this year, why don’t we actually stick to the plan? Skip the Turkey amnesia of Black Friday or Cyber Monday, and go straight to #GivingTuesday. It’s a thing! It’s been a thing! Make it your thing by visiting Charity Navigator and seeing what causes you can benefit most by donating or volunteering.
